The fire started Sunday afternoon, July 14 at a three-story apartment building on Monroe Street, said Terron Jones, spokesman for the Bridgeport Fire Department.
The fire was contained to the apartment on the second floor of the building and no occupants were home at the time, he said.
The cats were found when firefighters searched the unit.
"Unfortunately, the pets perished as a result of the conditions in the apartment prior to our arrival," the fire department said.
The fire department said the fire started in the kitchen but caused enough damage to the entire apartment to require the resident to be relocated.
All other units in the building were checked the other residents were allowed back in after the building was cleared.
No one was injured.
